The internal ballistics of the barrel, via choke constriction, have been shown to affect the downrange lateral pellet distribution, but not the longitudinal distribution.
To limit the possible variation in the experimental set up of the measurement facility, all choke tubes from 0.000" to 0.050" constriction were produced with a
linear taper profile.
A separate 0.020" constricted choke tube was constructed with a
1" parallel section profile to examine the effect of choke profile on the lateral pellet dispersion.
It was found that for the same constriction the 1" parallel section produced a slightly tighter distribution of pellets at 40 yards than the linear taper profile for every batch of ammunition tested.
However, the standard errors associated with the distribution show that
statistically there is no significant difference between the two profiles...
